BC Pro Day recap

CHESTNUT HILL – 24 of 32 NFL teams were represented inside Fish Field House on Friday morning as BC held its Pro Day for eight former Eagles, two players from Assumption and one from Bentley.

For about two hours, guys ran the 40, benched, did the vert and broad jump and went through some positional drills. A few guys – Christian Mahogany and Elijah Jones – didn’t do much after having a hell of a pre-draft process leading up to and including the NFL Combine.

Khris Banks, Kyle Hergel, Jones, Mahogany, Jason Maitre, John Pupel, Jaiden Woodbey and George Takacs were all on hand. Takacs did not participate but mingled with scouts. Jael Felix and Joseph MacDougall represented Assumption and Talon Vassar represented Bentley.

Hergel showed off his ridiculous strength with 30 reps in the bench, something he said he expected to do coming in. Hergel has shown he can learn on the fly, playing in six different offenses the last six years.

“I’ve been at three different schools, so I’ve never really had consistent playbooks,” he said. “Being able to learn the playbook at multiple different spots has really been something I can attest to. I’ve been in six different offenses in six different years. I can pick up a playbook…it just shows I can learn, I’m a sponge and I love to play ball.

“I didn’t really know what to expect. It was such a quick transition going from the bench to the vert…it was just like boom, boom, boom. But, yeah, I expected (the bench). It was a great experience. I’ve trained…everyone is always like ‘oh it’s two months,’ but no, it’s really been like six years. It’s been a long, long time. Many hours in the weight room, countless hours.”

Mahogany did positional work along with Hergel but otherwise took it easy, having done more than enough to hear his name called already in April. After coming back from his torn ACL, Mahogany was very appreciative of where he is now considering he wasn’t sure he’d have this opportunity two years ago.

“It means a lot,” Mahogany said. “I got hurt two years…it’s crazy it’s almost two years now…it was tough. I didn’t know if I’d ever come back and play football. I didn’t know if I’d ever be the same player or somebody that can be highly-touted still or maybe disregarded a little bit. I just played with a fire all year, rehabbed very strongly and just continued to be myself. That’s the biggest thing, mental health during that time, had to be good. I continued to focus on myself and met family, so it’s good now we’re here and I feel really good.

“I’m in a great spot mentally, physically, I’m just excited. This process is not over, but it’s almost hallway there. Next month I’m just ready to hear my name called.”

Maitre of course went to play at Wisconsin for a year, but the opportunity to show out in front of the NFL back home where it all started held significant meaning to him.

“I could have did it at Wisconsin, but I got the opportunity to do it here,” Maitre said. “My family is here, my mom, my brothers, my girlfriend, everybody in my family here and it’s just been a blessing. I thank God for today, what I’ve been able to do and the process honestly and everything that comes with it.”
