FOXBOROUGH – After a light walkthrough for the third Patriots training camp practice on Monday, AJ Brown met with the media for about 10 minutes.
Brown is fitting in nicely so far after already establishing some early chemistry with Drake Maye during the few days of mandatory minicamp in June. Brown was asked about Maye, the continuing conversation about his knee issues, his comfortability with the offense and more.
Here’s what stood out:
On his comfortability in the offense
“I’m still getting comfortable each and every day. I’m grateful. The offense is…I’m pretty…I’m in a good spot. I want to say I’m like, 90% you know, it’s really about going and executing and getting on the same page with Drake each and every day. But, I’m really comfortable.”
On what goes into building a relationship with Drake Maye
“Nonstop communication. Just hearing what he thinks, you know? And he’s listening to me and we’re just trying to get on the same page.”
On going against Christian Gonzalez
“Everybody knows Gonzo’s a stud. Each and every day, whenever I got to go against him the margin of error is very small. That’s what you want and those are my matchups, so I don’t shy away from those. CD (Carlton Davis III) as well. So, it’s good-on-good and we’re making each other better, you know? We in competition right now but it’s all for the greater good of the team.”
On what he likes about the offense
“The variety. I can’t get into that, ya’ll know that.”
On being a Patriot
“I’m still walking on answered prayers, man. It’s a blessing, man. I come to work each and every day with a smile on my face. I’m around great guys, great energy, pushing each other to be great and holding each other accountable.”
On if the continuous questions regarding his knee issues frustrate him
“It’s not frustrating at all because I don’t pay no mind to it.”
On what impresses him most about Maye on and off the field
“True professional. True professional the way he goes about his business. They’re not really letting him throw the ball right now, which is grunt noise, but we’ll get going as camp progresses.”
On how his relationship with Mike Vrabel has evolved since being with him in Tennessee
“Just knowing that it comes from a genuine place. First team meeting, he had ripped me for almost bringing in a catch. He expected me to make that play and early on as a rookie, I didn’t really like that too much, you know? But, now I know it comes from a great place and he expects me to make that play and so do I as well.”
On Vrabel being physically involved in practice at times as a head coach
“Yeah, he thinks he still can play. He took like, an hour-30 in the workouts yesterday. Like, he thinks he still can play. But, it’s cool. He walks around with an animosity, he chirps guys and it’s cool to see, it’s fun.”
On the time he spent with Drake Maye in North Carolina after becoming a Patriot
“What stood out? That those guys stay up all night. I was in the bed, 9:30, and they were loud. But, Drake is Drake, man. He does a great job, he comes to work, he’s prepared and he’s a true professional. He can make any throw, so, we’re excited and we’re just going to continue to try and keep getting better.
“It was real helpful. We spent three days down there and got after it. It was pouring rain.”
On building a relationship with the fans
“I’m here to make plays and try to build this relationship. Let it happen organically.”
