Recapping another up & down day for the Patriots offense

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots unofficially wrapped up the preseason on Tuesday with the final practice before the exhibition finale against the Giants on Thursday night.

New England still has a walkthrough Wednesday and practices scheduled for Sunday and Monday, but eyes will be shifting towards week one by the time the Patriots return home from New Jersey in the very early hours of Friday morning.

Tuesday’s session definitely had more energy to it than the one on Monday did, but it was still a bit of a rollercoaster of the offense.

Here’s a recap of the hour-and-a-half practice out behind Gillette Stadium:

Early observations

It was good to see defensive coordinator Terrell Williams out talking to the media before practice after his health scare. He wouldn’t get into what exactly he dealt with, but said he’s ready to go. Ryan Cowden and defensive assistant coaches also spoke for about 10 minutes.

Once things got underway, Vrabel spent the majority of one period with the special teams unit during a punt period. Funny enough, assistant Mike Smith noted how Vrabel does a little bit of everything when he was speaking. Bryce Baringer was hitting some absolute moonshots too.

Team period (coming out)

Drake Maye: Nice run for Rhamondre Stevenson; dart to the right sideline for Kayshon Boutte (snatches it with Carlton Davis in coverage); incomplete slant to Boutte (out in front); crosser to Stefon Diggs; PBU by Alex Austin against Boutte on a bad back shoulder throw.

Josh Dobbs: Run stuff by Jack Gibbens vs. Antonio Gibson; crosser to Mack Hollins; strip sack by Keion White (just bullied his way inside); run stuff by David Olajiga vs. Gibson.

Maye: Run stuff by Christian Elliss; rollout and completion on play action to Austin Hooper; combined sack for Robert Spillane and K’Lavon Chaisson.

(Reset/quick break)

Maye: Swing to Gibson; crosser to Pop (good pass protection); Milton Williams bats a ball down at the line; sack by Spillane (Mack Hollins made the play of camp on the throw though, leaping up for a sick one-handed grab deep down field vs. Davis).

Dobbs: Out to John Jiles (wide open); deep crosser to Hollins (good pass pro again); hitch to Jeremiah Webb; wide open deep crosser to Diggs who immediately burns his defender off the line of scrimmage.

Maye: Sack by Chaisson (bullied Will Campbell); sack Christian Barmore (Chaisson again pushed Campbell backwards significantly too); screen to Stevenson (argument to be made that Keion White got a sack in first); Jabrill Peppers sacked untouched off the edge.

Field goal period

Both Andy Borregales and Parker Romo went 4-4 with their attempts from about 35ish yards.

Team period (coming out)

Maye: Craig Woodson and Elliss combined run stuff; nice outside run by TreVeyon Henderson (great blocking downfield by Hollins); wide open crosser to Pop, big throw to Austin Hooper open up the seam; incomplete slant to Hollins (hospital ball); Williams and Barmore combine for a sack (Diggs did have a catch over the middle on the play).

Dobbs: Short run by Gibson; deep out and nice sideline toe tap by Pop; out to Diggs; run stuff in the backfield immediately by Olajiga.

End of game situation (1:30 left, ball at the NE 30, 3 timeouts)

Maye: Incomplete short to Hollins; absolute dime up the seam to Hunter Henry behind the ear of Elliss down to about the 50-yard line; short pass to Pop (gets out of bounds); incomplete deep(ish) in to Diggs; swing pass to Henderson; short first down pass to Henderson on third down; Clock/spike with 11 seconds; Maye centers the ball; clock/spike with four seconds left; 40ish yard field goal by Andy Borregales is good.

End of game situation (15 seconds left, ball at the 30)

Maye: Out to Pop; clock/spike with two seconds left; Romo hits about a 42 or 43-yard field goal.
