After leading Portland (ME) High School to a Class A state title, Sean Green has stepped down as head football coach.
“After much thought and reflection, I have made the difficult decision to step down as the Head Football Coach of Portland High School.”
By all accounts, the announcement was a surprise as one of the top coaches in Maine walks away from a program that is just starting to hit its stride as a top tier program.
Portland was knocking on the door of a championship for years and after playing second fiddle to programs like Thornton Academy, the Bulldogs finally broke through thanks to Coach Green and players like quarterback Louis Thurston and wide receiver Cordell Jones Jr.
Now after two seasons, a new face will lead the program. Portland returns Jones and a talented group of underclassman primed to defend their state title.
Green reminded his players that no one is bigger than the program and the program will move on.
“Remember, no individual is bigger than the program. What we’ve built together will continue.”
Green added: “The players and coaches who come after me will carry this program forward, just as we’ve done, and continue to work toward even greater success.”
Green believes he leaving the program in a good place. He credits the foundation he and his staff laid the past two seasons.
“Portland Football will always remain a special place, and it will always be successful because of the foundation we’ve laid together.”
Green also guided Cape to a Class C state championship in 2021. A statement said it best when it comes to Coach Green. “He’s a great coach but an even better person and we wish him all the best,”
We wish Coach Green the best of luck in whatever endeavors he chooses to pursue moving forward.
