Bill O’Brien’s first dip in the transfer portal as head coach at BC is off to a pretty damn good start.
After locking up speedy wide receiver VJ Wilkins from Campbell over the weekend, FAU tight end Zeke Moore and Ball State running back Vaughn Pemberton joined the program on Monday night. Then, on Tuesday, the staff made its biggest splash yet.
Alabama quarterback Dylan Lonergan – who had 22 offers coming out of high school from every major program – ended up choosing BC over his hometown Georgia Bulldogs. Lonergan has only thrown 15 passes so far at the D1 level, but he’s got three years of eligibility remaining and quickly makes BC’s quarterback room one of the best in the ACC along with Grayson James and incoming freshman Shaker Reisig.
Longergan is roughly 6’2,” 200lbs. and is a prototypical QB for this offense. Some of his offers coming out of high school included Alabama of course – he was recruited by O’Brien – Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon, Penn State and Stanford, just to name a few.
It’s tough to know what this means for James, but if he’s the type of kid we all believe he is – the complete opposite of Tommy Castellanos – he’ll embrace the competition from the ‘Bama boy. If not, this might be an easy ride for Lonergan to become the next BC starting QB.
Whatever happens, this is unquestionably the biggest splash so far for this staff and the addition of the other depth guys shows a clear emphasis on improving the offense as quickly as possible.
