According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots are releasing wide receiver Tyquan Thornton.

Thornton was a second round pick out of Baylor in 2022. He was supposed to add a vertical speed element to the Patriots offense but Thornton never became that player due to injuries and inconsistency.

The Patriots were carrying seven receivers on their 53-man roster but with the other young receivers on the roster getting more reps, Thornton became the odd man out. The Patriots will activate Christian Barmore and use the open roster spot on him.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Thornton, played in six games this season with one start. He had four catches for 47 yards.

For his career, he appeared in 28 games (13 starts) for the Patriots and had 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns.

The Patriots host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, looking to win their third game in their last four.
