It has not always been an easy road for offensive tackle Vedarian Lowe but the third year pro out of Illinois is starting to put it all together and is looking like a possible solution at left tackle for the Patriots.
Lowe was a sixth round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2022. He was traded to the Patriots in August of 2023 for a sixth round pick. The Patriots needed to upgrade their depth at offensive tackle and Lowe fit the bill. He was a player they liked in college.
Lowe played a lot last season but struggled at times, going from right tackle to left tackle and back to right tackle. Going into this season, Lowe was expected to be a rotational tackle once again but won the starting left tackle job in training camp. Despite battling injuries, he has been the Patriots most consistent lineman.
Lowe has kept things in perspective despite his individual success thus far this season.
“It is a week by week thing. Obviously we’re playing against great individual talent. Everyone brings a different challenge. I have to find different ways to succeed.”
Staying healthy is a big key for Lowe. He needs to stay on the field in order to secure his spot as the team’s starting left tackle. Lowe
“Part of it is staying healthy and being very particular. Focusing on the things that I am coached to do.”
Patriots coach Jerod Mayo is a believer. When asked earlier today if Lowe can be a long term starter at left tackle, Mayo wasted no time in reaffirming the organization’s faith in Lowe.
“Absolutely. One word to describe him – I’ve used this word in the past – is steady. You don’t want to hear his name called. That’s a good thing.”
Stability is what the Patriots need along the offensive line and Lowe brings that. He has the length and athleticism necessary to be a consistent starter at the position. If the Patriots can wait on taking an offensive tackle in the first round of next year’s draft, it would make it easier for them to address other areas of need.
Lowe recognizes he has a great opportunity to lock down the left tackle job moving forward and he wants to take advantage of that opportunity.
“I have the utmost confidence in myself, that I’m able to do this. My goal is to prove that to myself week in and week out. The result are going to be the result as long as I dedicate myself to my game and go out out there every Sunday and improve, I’ll see the results.”
Lowe is questionable for this week with an ankle injury but he is expected to play. If he does, the Patriots will have the left side locked down.
