Patriots Preview: 5 match-ups to watch in the Seahawks, Patriots game

The Metcalf, Gonzalez match-up is must see T.V.

The Patriots host the Seattle Seahawks in the home opener. Seattle will present a variety of match-up problems on both sides of the ball so the Patriots will have to play a clean game and own the match-ups that will be in their favor.

The Patriots front seven will need to control the line of scrimmage against a physical Seahawks run game. On the back end, the secondary will need to hold up against a trio of good receivers.

Offensively, it is all about pressure and dealing with it. Seattle will play more eight man fronts and dial up blitzes. The offensive line and Jacoby Brissett need to be on the same page.

Here are five match ups to watch in today’s game.

D.K Metcalf vs. Christian Gonzalez: The match up of the game. Gonzo will be glued to Metcalf on the back side and expect him to travel with him as well. Gonzalez will have to be physical with Metcalf today if the Patriots want to slow down the big receiver.

George Fant vs. Keion White: The Patriots have to try and get White on Fant as much as possible. Fant will struggle to block him one in one. Keeping White away from Charles Cross is the play. Cross has length and could slow White down.

Dre’Mont Jones vs. Vedarian Lowe: Jones is a hybrid outside linebacker, edge rusher type. He can get consistent pressure off the snap and he plays with good lean and bend. Lowe is going to have to jump set him consistently and cut the edge off or it will be a long afternoon for him and the Patriots. The Patriots will need to help Lowe at some point.

Jackson Smith-Njigba vs. Jonathan Jones: JSN is a terrific route runner who does a great job of creating separation at the top of routes. Jones will match up with him as the field corner. He will need to be on his game, especially in man coverage. JSN is a tough match-up because he is so silky smooth.

Tyler Lockett vs. nickel and dime corners: Tyler Lockett is one of the best slot receivers in the NFL. He is a good route runner and he knows how to get open. Whether it is Marcus Jones, Alex Austin or Marco Wilson, they will need to be found fundamentally and do a good job of communicating when passing Lockett off in zone or match coverage.
