DiBiaso taking full advantage of working with Will Lawing & Bill O’Brien

Being the son of one of the most well known and successful high school coaches in Massachusetts history has some obvious benefits.

But, it doesn’t mean you know everything there is to know about the always evolving game of football.

Boston College quarterbacks coach Jonathan DiBiaso never thought he did know it all, but he never realized how much he still had to learn until he began working for Bill O’Brien. With some of the names that O’Brien has worked with, DiBiaso knows how lucky he is on a daily basis to be gaining knowledge from a proven offensive mind.

“There’s a lot that I don’t know and I always have room to improve,” he said during BC’s local Media Day on Monday. “You’re talking about every day I walk in the building, down the hall is a resource that coached Tom Brady, coached Deshaun Watson, coached Bryce Young. He was the head coach at Penn State in a really tough situation and turned that program around. He was a very successful in the NFL as a head coach at the Texans and as a coordinator for Bill Belichick and Nick Saban – two of the best coaches of all time.

“I don’t have all the answers and I’m just trying to be a sponge.”

When O’Brien first arrived to BC, he talked about The Patriot Way, not necessarily on the field, but off it. That conversation has stuck with DiBiaso since then.

“When he first got here, he talked about sort of The Patriot Way that he had learned,” said DiBiaso. “Which is, ‘hey, don’t let the people around you down.’ That’s just the approach I take every day. I do not want to let Tommy down, Grayson down, Coach O’Brien down, Coach (Will) Lawing down…I’ve always got room to improve. There are no dumb questions. Just take this as an opportunity to learn, help this program and help our guys be the best versions of themselves as they can be.”

Working with Lawing has also been an eye-opening experience for DiBiaso.

“He’s a very smart dude,” he added with a grin. “That’s a guy that has worked with Coach O’Brien for 13 years, so he’s a guy that understands how Coach O’Brien operates, how Coach O’Brien wants it to look like…he’s a great resource of knowledge for me. I think we feed off each other pretty well.

“It’s been good so far. He’s a competitive dude, which I love. We’ve got high expectations for our guys and what we want to do whether it’s coaching, whether it’s recruiting, whether it’s whatever. It’s been a pleasure working with him.”

DiBiaso obviously had known who Bill O’Brien was long before joining his staff with all of the New England ties, but the most surprising thing so far? O’Brien’s sense of humor.

“He was a St. John’s Prep guy. So, as an Everett guy, it’s like ‘oh, you’ve got Coach O’Brien who’s a local guy, Andover guy who went to St. John’s Prep, went to an Ivy League school, played local, worked his way from the bottom up and has succeeded,’ so what I’ve learned is he’s a funny, funny dude.

“He’s got a funny personality. The biggest thing I’ve taken away from him is we try to keep things as simple as possible, which I appreciate. There’s always room for improvement and you can’t get bored with the fundamentals. What’s the easiest way to teach it to the kids so they understand it and can apply it on the field? That’s what I really appreciate. He’s always challenging me.”
