Wide receiver questions looming large for the Patriots as NFL Draft approaches

So, what are the Patriots doing at receiver?

Eliot Wolf had plenty of praise for the current room when he met with the media on Thursday morning. But, Albert Breer has recently reported that the Patriots were one of a few teams to contact the Eagles regarding the availability of stud wideout AJ Brown. Brown turned his Instagram picture into Tom Brady and followed KJ Osborn and Jacoby Brissett.

Tee Higgins’ name has obviously come up with talks around the No. 34 pick and we all know they were in heavily on Calvin Ridley before he decided to take more money and go to Tennessee.

So, are they all in when it comes to trying to get a No. 1? Are they simply dipping their toes in the pool? Are they simply drafting a guy or two and hoping they have enough?

It feels like this regime is far more inclined to go after guys with big contracts if we’re in on Ridley and are making calls on Brown and (hopefully) Higgins. Wolf said the team is still open for business at No. 3 as well, which sounds like they’re waiting for the Raiders, Vikings or 49ers to bowl them over with picks and their superstar receivers.

But, the emphasis in which Wolf spoke about his receiving core could scare some fans. Does he really think they have enough, or was he simply saying the right thing and not throwing the room under the bus already? Hopefully, it’s the latter.

Either way, the wide receiver decision is a fascinating piece of the most intriguing Patriots draft in decades. Here’s what Wolf had to say on the direction of the position and the offense in general:

On what the team currently has and if he believes they have an ‘X’ receiver:

“I think we have players that can line up and play X. Do we have players that on a three-by-one can beat the backside coverage every single time? I’m not sure if we have that just yet. But we certainly have good receivers that we’re excited about working with. K.J. Osborn can play all three positions. We have Kendrick Bourne coming back. Pop [DeMario Douglas], JuJu [Smith-Schuster], I mean, you know, the list goes on. We feel like we have NFL receivers.”

On if he believes the wide receiver group is underrated:

“I do, yes. I mean, we have NFL receivers, we have NFL tight ends, we have NFL running backs, we have NFL offensive lineman. We feel good about where we are and we feel through free agency, on the offensive side in particular, that we’ve been able to supplement our roster properly, so we’re not having to draft for need as much offensively.”

On the offense as a whole and if it’s enough to support a rookie QB:

“I do. I read a lot of that storyline. I’m not really sure what that means. We have a solid offensive line. We resigned Mike Onwenu, we have David Andrews coming back. We have three rookies that we drafted last year that are developing. We signed [Chukwuma] Okorafor from the Steelers. Hunter Henry. I mean, a good running game, a solid foundation and a solid system in place with coach [Alex] Van Pelt on the offense. So, I definitely feel like we can support that.”
