Trevor Knight to take over at Dracut

Following a report by Alex Agrella of RecruitingBoard.net, Trevor Knight confirmed on Twitter that he will be the next coach at Dracut.

Knight takes over for Jermaine McKenzie, who stepped down after three years with the program.

It has been a rough go of it lately for the Middies, who needed a co-op with Innovation Academy to have enough players to field a team.

In Knight, Dracut finds someone who was a success as a player, both for Nashua South (NH) and the University of New Hampshire. Knight also competed in the Canadian Football League.

A quarterback, Knight put up stellar numbers at UNH. He was fifth all-time in program history with 590 completions. He was sixth all-time in passing yards with 6,345. He was sixth in passing attempts with 1,005.

At Nashua South, Knight was a two-time captain and the New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year. A three-sport athlete (track and basketball), Knight 1,800 yards and 19 touchdowns with just two interceptions as a senior. He also rushed for 1,533 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Knight — since graduating from UNH — has also been a quarterback coach in New England at TKQB Academy.

With the low numbers and lack of recent success as a program, turning around Dracut will not be easy. The last time the Middies posted a winning season was 2016, when Dracut went 6-5.

It is not impossible to win at Dracut, though. In 2008, behind a dominant season from quarterback Matt Grimard, Dracut won the Division 1A Super Bowl, 27-0, over Marshfield. The Middies made the Division 2 playoffs the next season, as well.

Knight’s first task will be addressing the numbers problem there, and instilling a culture where the team believes it can win again. He is still young, and should be able to relate to the players.
