Jermaine Wiggins speaks on Brockton departure

Since his dismissal as the coach of Brockton High, it has been radio silence from Jermaine Wiggins.

Until now.

On WEEI, Wiggins spoke for the first time about leaving Brockton. Although he did not go too much in depth, Wiggins spoke about the school wanting a union member to be coach of the team.

After a WEEI caller broached the subject, this is what Wiggins said.

“No, coming in, it was a different guy who hired me,” Wiggins said. “So the guy that hired me that was in on that stuff that happened with the whole ($14 million school budget thing). So he was the original guy. He kind of knew, and fought that battle for me. . . . Once he got let go, and (lost) any real connection to make moves, that ultimately went out the window.”

Coming into the hiring process, there was confusion over whether or not Brockton would even be able to hire someone who was not in the union. The hiring of Wiggins, who is not in the union, answered that question, but Wiggins seems to be saying that’s not the case going forward.

“Like I said, I felt bad more for the kids than anything,” Wiggins said. “Me, I’ll land on my feet. I’ll be fine. I’m not worried about that. I made some great relationships with a lot of coaches over there. Hopefully, the next guy in line is one of the guys that is currently on the staff, which I think . . . The guy that I’d like to see, unfortunately for him, he’s not a union guy. Maybe they’ll bend a little bit. But who the hell knows, probably not. He is a local guy, so maybe that might help him.”

We have our ideas on who this person is, but will obviously not speculate here. There are a number of young, energetic candidates who may put their foot forward.

The Boxers went 3-8 in Wiggins’ year, after going 9-2 in 2002. However, the Boxers were extremely young, and Wiggins spoke about their potential, believing he had the Boxers on the right track.

“That will ultimately . . . The culture was changing,” Wiggins said. “The standard was changing. All that stuff was changing. Our record wasn’t where we wanted it to be. But we had a freshman quarterback who was evolving. We were headed in the right direction. We had probably nine seniors. I’d say five of them, or six of them contributed this year. A lot of our kids were younger kids. So, that, ultimately, we were going to be loaded next year.

“But, like I said, I can’t do nothing about it once, you know, that’s the direction they chose. They chose it.”
