West Boylston completes one of the most dominate two year runs with a Division 8 title

Most people couldn’t tell you where West Boylston is if you asked them. Thanks to Head Coach Mike Ross and the football program, however, West Boylston has been on the map for a while. Literally and figuratively.

Thanks to a punishing ground attack that churned out 359 yards rushing and 413 yards of total offense, the Lions won in convincing fashion in Wednesday’s Division 8 Super Bowl, 41-7. They have won back to back super bowl titles after capturing the Division 7 crown last season.

The offensive output is no surprise. The Lions have been scoring at will the past two seasons . You would not know however because the program is in Central, Massachusetts and it flies under the radar.

After the game, Ross talked about the program not getting the attention it deserves.

“I mean, just look at today. We don’t get that much respect outside of 495, maybe we will after today.”

As good as the Lions offense was, their defense was even better. Under the tutelage of defensive coordinator Dutch Holland, the defense limited one of the most explosive offenses in the state to just seven points and 122 yards of total offense. Carver averaged 41.8 points per game this season.  The Crusaders struggled to get into a rhythm offensively thanks to West Boylston’s pass rush and their ability to match up in the secondary.

According to Ross, the game plan on defense was simple.

“Our goal was to get pressure on the quarterback and we got a lot of pressure on him. We wanted to make him uncomfortable and we made him uncomfortable.”

Ross has won his fair share of games at West Boylston and has always fielded competitive teams through the years but this current group of seniors has been on one of the dominant runs we have seen in recent years the past two seasons. It is a special group that Ross summed up as only he can.

“(The seniors) are tough as hell”

Well said for a program that is built on toughness and execution.
