New England high school preview — Week 10

With the MIAA playoffs in full swing, we figured we would break down the Massachusetts games by playoff division, just to group the games together.

It’s going to be an amazing weekend, so let’s get right to it.

Here we go.

Division 1

St. John’s Prep meets BC High in a battle of Catholic Conference rivals. The Prep won this regular season meeting handily, and is favored to do so again. Andover meets upstart Weymouth in the other game on that side of the bracket. Although Andover is and should be the favorite, Weymouth is capable of pulling off another upset. Possibly the best game of the weekend takes place on the other side when Springfield Central travels to Xaverian. The Golden Eagles won the regular season meeting, 44-41, and another shootout is probably in the works. Finally, Methuen is at Needham in a bit of a contrast of styles. Methuen has the high-powered offense, while the Rockets would probably want something a little slower paced and have their running game take over.

Division 2

Winchester is at top seed King Philip. The Warriors are a heavy favorite to make it back to Gillette, but don’t discount a Sachems team that just upset a good North Andover squad. Barnstable is at Peabody in one of the best games in the weekend. It’s a long drive for Barnstable from Cape Cod to the North Shore, but this is basically a pick ’em. Wellesley is at Catholic Memorial, and the host Knights are the heavy favorite to win this one, although Wellesley is playing its best football. Another fantastic showdown on the same side of that bracket when Bishop Feehan is at Marshfield. Feehan has been lights out of late, and Marshfield keeps getting better, too. A shootout is plausible in this one.

Division 3

In yet another rematch, Milford hosts North Attleboro, which is coming off a nice win in Western Mass. over West Springfield. Milford has suffered some big injuries, but is favored to get the season sweep here. Both Walpole and Mansfield got off to somewhat rough starts this season, but each has bounced back hard. Walpole might be the favorite based on its superior skill talent, but Mansfield is always tough this time of year. Westfield travels to Billerica, and the Bombers may have turned a few heads with how they took care of Woburn. Billerica is one of the favorites to win the whole thing. Dartmouth is on the road at Milton, who stumbled a bit down the stretch but has recovered. Dartmouth is still perfect and has played well all season.

Division 4

Somerset Berkley is one of the top teams on the South Coast, but has a steep climb against top seed Duxbury. No. 12 Burlington just earned a big, upset win over Norwood, and has an interesting game with host Tewksbury. This should be a close game decided by 10 points or fewer. The Holliston and Scituate game on the other side of the bracket is interesting. Both teams lost to Milton and Foxboro, but put together solid seasons. Scituate can score points in a hurry, so you could see another high-scoring affair here. Marblehead travels to Grafton in an interesting game, as the No. 14 Magicians shocked a lot of people with their first-round win over Middleboro. Grafton reversed a result from the regular season when it beat Worcester South in the first round.

Division 5

Host and top seed Hanover is the favorite to not just get to Gillette, but possibly win once it gets there, so look for the Hawks to be a heavy favorite against Bishop Stang. Dedham is the No. 4 seed and host against Danvers in one of the better games in the bracket. Dedham’s AJ Pinet has had a terrific season as one of the top running backs in the state. No. 7 Newburyport has been flying under the radar a little, but is a dangerous team out of the Cape Ann League. The Clippers visit a Foxboro team that is, like Hanover, a favorite to make it to Gillette. No. 6 seed Old Rochester at No. 3 Shawsheen is another very good game, with Shawsheen probably the team to beat.

Division 6

No. 8 Fairhaven at top seed Norwell is another really interesting matchup. Fairhaven has one of the top rushing attacks in the division, while Norwell has been on a roll most of this season. Lynnfield is at a very good Hudson team on that same side of the bracket. Lynnfield’s only loss is to North Attleboro, and Hudson is led by top quarterback Jake Attaway. On the other side of the bracket is No. 15 Stoneham at No. 10 Bellingham. Stoneham is coming off a huge upset of No. 2 Abington, while Bellingham bested Maynard. The Spartans and their double-wing offense take center stage here. No. 6 Cardinal Spellman is coming off a big win over St. Mary’s, while No. 3 Salem held off Dennis-Yarmouth. Salem is the slight favorite here but it should be a close game.

Division 7

No. 8 Tyngsboro is coming off a win over Gardner where it scored 53 points, so top-seeded Uxbridge has its work cut out for it on defense. Uxbridge though is still the favorite here both in this game and overall in the division. No. 4 Rockland hosts No. 5 Clinton in what should be an even matchup. Rockland might be the slight favorite. In a rematch of a regular season game, No. 2 Cohasset hosts No. 7 Mashpee. Cohasset won the regular season meeting, 42-0, but Mashpee is still capable of pulling off the upset. No. 6 Amesbury is at No. 3 West Bridgewater, and both teams won their first round games handily. That said, even as the lower seed, Amesbury might be the slight favorite here.

Division 8

No. 8 Blackstone-Millville has had a good season, and comes in to its game with top-seeded West Boylston with a record of 8-1. Still, West Boylston is a heavy favorite to win this game and raise the trophy when all is said and done. No. 12 Randolph is coming in off a 3-0 win over Ware and now faces No. 4 Cathedral. It would be a surprise to see another low-scoring game, but even as a No. 12 seed, Randolph has a chance to make some noise this tournament. No. 7 KIPP Academy at No. 2 Carver is a terrific quarterfinal matchup. Both teams are capable of great things in this bracket, but Carver probably has the edge in this one. No. 6 Old Colony takes the trip to No. 3 Hoosac Valley. Hoosac Valley and its dominant rushing attack is the team to beat.

Dexter at Pingree — This is a terrific rivalry that has produced some great games in recent years. Both teams have steadily improved over the course of the season, and this should be a close game.

BB&N at Lawrence Academy — You might see both of these teams make a NEPSAC bowl regardless of what happens, but this will be a tightly-contested game regardless. BB&N won this one last year going away.

Choate at Deerfield — Choate is coming off its best win of the year in a victory over Avon Old Farms. Choate is the favorite here, but don’t count out Deerfield, which has been competitive with everyone it has played.

St. Joseph (Trumbull) at Staples — St. Joseph is a perennial power, and takes on a Staples team that is 7-1 and has only lost to a very good West Haven team. Both teams have played tough schedules.

Oxford Hills at Portland — A huge showdown in the Class A playoffs as Oxford has only one loss to a Maine team this season (Leavitt), while Portland is still unbeaten. This one could go either way.

Salem at Bedford — This might be the best game in New Hampshire this weekend. Bedford is very bit the favorite to win D1 as Pinkerton and Londonderry, but Salem is battle-tested and capable of the upset.

Central at Bishop Hendricken — Usually, you pencil in Hendricken and La Salle to move on at any point in the playoffs. But Central is a good team and may have a chance at the upset here in one of the best games in Rhode Island.

Burr & Burton vs. Hartford at Rutland — The D1 championship in Vermont should be a fun one. These have been the two best teams in the state all season. Hartford won the regular season meeting, but anything is possible in this one.
