The Patriots proved last night that they truly are a game plan specific team. Using a vanilla, run heavy offensive game plan and a defense designed to get consistent pressure on Matt Ryan, the Patriots rolled to a 25-0 win over the Falcons last night.
It wasn’t pretty but style points do not matter in the NFL. Wins do and the Patriots dominated the Falcons last night en route to their fifth straight win.
In fairness, the Patriots only ran the ball 30 times while Mac Jones threw it 26 times. New England only ran 56 plays total but they were efficient and capitalized on field position when they got it.
The defense did its job limiting Atlanta to just 165 yards of total offense. Falcons quarterbacks were picked off four times, the Patriots sacked Atlanta’s quarterbacks four times and they had a pick six.
Bill Belichick and his staff couldn’t have drawn up a better game plan on either side of the ball. Sure, the execution could have been better at times and Mac Jones forcing a ball to Jonnu Smith didn’t come back to hurt the team but by in large, the Patriots did what they wanted to do in this game.
The contrast from last week’s plan to this week’s plan is night and day. The Patriots needed to use more gadgets and wrinkles to slow down Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney last week. They didn’t need gimmick plays this week against an Atlanta defense that quite frankly, isn’t very good.
Belichick has always stressed that each game is it’s own entity. Not every opponent is the same. While every team in the NFL is game plan specific in theory, the Patriots are the only team that truly changes what they do from week to week. It is what makes Belichick the best coach in the league and his staff the best in the league. Their ability to adapt and change is what has made them the most successful franchise in the league the past twenty years. That ability to change on the fly was on full display last night.
