It is a battle of the undefeateds if you will when the Patriots travel to Orchard Park, New York to take on the Buffalo Bills.
The Patriots have absolutely owned the Bills during the Belichick, Brady era, especially in Buffalo. Tom Brady is 30-3 in his career against the Bills.
Bills fans are hoping that this is the year their team breaks the Patriots curse at home and actually wins a game. Buffalo’s roster is vastly improved so if there was ever a year to beat the Patriots at home, this might be the year.
Here are five keys to this game.
1. Spread the wealth offensively: With Julian Edelman nursing a rib injury, look for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to involve the running backs and tight ends more involved in the passing game today. The Patriots need to spread out their touches and get contributions from all their skill guys in this game.
2. Find a way to run the ball: The Bills are very good defensively in all three levels. It is going to be tough to run the ball on them. Buffalo ranks eighth against the run coming into this game. They are stout inside. With James Develin out, look for the Patriots to run the football ore out of 11 and 12 personnel and spread Buffalo out.
3. Limit Allen’s runs out of the pocket: The Patriots need to be fundamentally sound defensively. They cannot allow Josh Allen to break contain on passing downs and take off. They must keep him in the pocket and force him to hold the ball. Post snap disguising will be key for the Patriots in this game.
4. Be ready for gadgets: Bills offensive coordinator and former Patriots offensive assistant Brian Daboll knows how this Patriots defense works. Daboll loves to use tricks and gadgets and he’ll have a couple up his sleeve today. The Patriots need to be ready for that, especially in the red zone. I am sure Belichick has emphasized this situation all week in practice.
5. Pick up the blitz: The Patriots offensive line is banged up. You can expect Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier to be more aggressive than usual and come after Tom Brady. Buffalo isn’t a big blitz team but they will be this week.
Final score: Patriots 31 Bills 21: Buffalo will give the Patriots some problems in this game and play them tough. In the end however, the Patriots defense will make some big plays and the offense will use Buffalo’s aggressiveness against them. The Bills are better, but they haven’t quite closed the gap on New England.
