Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider acknowledged yesterday that he has indeed reached out to free agent Colin Kaepernick’s agent. The Seahawks need a back up quarterback and have expressed an interest in both Kaepernick and Robert Griffin Jr.
Here are three reasons why Kap would be a great fit in Seattle.
1. Fits the Offensive Scheme: Kaepernick fits offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell’s scheme because his game is very similar to Russell Wilson’s. Kaepernick is bigger and more athletic but he could do many of the same things within the offense that Wilson can do.
2. Familiarity: The Seahawks know Kapernick and he knows them. Pete Carroll and his staff know what kind of player he is and how he would fit into the scheme and more importantly, into the locker room. Kaepernick has always been a good teammate. The Seahawks know that and that is why they are considering him.
3. The Seahawks Have a Supportive Locker Room and Ownership: Where ever Kaepernick signs, that organization must be prepared to deal with the circus that will come with him being on the team. The Seahawks have the leadership both at the top and within their locker room to deal with the media attention and make Kaepernick feel like a part of the team. The Seahawks would be a great fit for him in this regard.
I would not be surprised if Kaepernick signs with the Seahawks. He should. Seattle needs an experienced back up who fits their offensive scheme. Kaepernick is that guy. Signing him to a one year deal makes sense for both sides.
