Four Downs for March 6th 2017

By John Sarianides

Four downs is four stories that piqued my interest today. Here goes.

1st Down: Romo to the Jags? Really? Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas reported that there was some chatter this weekend at the combine regarding Tony Romo possibly being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

I think there is some legitimacy to this report. Jags Czar Tom Coughlin wants to win now. He doesn’t buy Blake Bortles as his starting quarterback. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise if Bortles is moved this off-season.

Romo would be a great fit in Jacksonville. He would have a quality receiving corp to work with and the Jaguars have a lot of young talent on defense. I don’t see Romo ending up in Jacksonville but stranger things have happened.

2nd Down: Something is “Cook”ing in Tennessee: The Titans are reportedly the favorites to land Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks in a trade. Tennessee is armed with the 5th and 18th picks in the first round.

Titans general manager Jon Robinson wouldn’t trade the 5th pick for Cooks but I do think he would be willing to part with the 18th pick. That pick would probably be enough to pry Cooks out of New Orleans.

Cooks has been on record as saying he would want an extension no matter where he ends. The Titans have the cap space to pay him long term.

3rd Down: Scot McCloughan and the Skins Are Heading for a Split: The Redskins are an absolute train wreck. Just when you thought owner Daniel Snyder was finally getting his house in order, reports have surfaced that there is friction between general manager Scot McCloughan and team president Bruce Allen.

Couple that with rumors thst McCloughan has a drinking problem and the general manager and the team are headed for a split.

It’s a shame because McCloughan is a terrific talent evaluator who loves the game. He is one of the best general managers in the game but he’s being undermined by a meglomaniac like Allen.

4th Down: Obi is the One at the Combine: UConn safety Obi Melifonwu put on a show today at the combine. Melinfonwu ran a 4.4 forty and had a vertical jump of 41 inches. At 6-4 224, Melinfonwu has rare size and athleticism. He is a freak athlete who can step in and start as a rookie.

Melinfonwu was projected as a second rounder coming into the draft process but after today, he is a first rounder now. I would not be surprised if Melinfonwu went in the top twenty picks.
