The Patriots have the least diverse staff in the NFL according to an ESPN study. Bill Belichick currently employs two African-American coaches on his staff.
Belichick was criticized last year for hiring his son Steve to be the safeties coach and just this week, the Patriots hired his son Brian as a scouting assistant.
Nepotism is a way of life in the NFL. It’s not a surprise. The sons of Andy Reid, Mike Zimmer and Norv Turner also coach in the NFL. There are others as well.
Personally, I have a problem with the ESPN study. Despite only having two minority coaches on the staff, the Patriots are a diverse organization and owner Robert Kraft preaches diversity.
To label an organization as not being diverse enough is an unfair label. Not that I’m surprised. ESPN is the home of fraudulent hiring so people living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
Bill Belichick likes to hire young coaches, train them and hire them as position coaches and coordinators when they are ready. Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia are prime examples.
There is nothing wrong with that. You don’t hire people simply based on skin color or gender. That’s not right!
There are plenty of minority assistant coaches in the NFL. The league needs more minority head coaches. That and it must get rid of the buddy system. Most hires in the NFL are connection hires. Until that changes, nothing will change.
