Hue Jackson finally had his first disagreement with the Browns analytics driven front office. It took a little longer than I thought but it finally happened.
It took a little longer than expected but Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson finally had his first rift with the Browns front office and the team’s sports science department .The disagreement centers around how many padded practices the team will conduct during training camp. Jackson made the revaluation public during a press conference on Tuesday.
Look, I have a ton of respect for Hue Jackson. I think he is a terrific offensive mind and a good coach. However, I think Jackson made a big mistake taking the Browns job. Jackson thought he was going to have more power in Cleveland than he would have had in any other situation. What he failed to realize is, you can’t reason with sabermatricians and stat geeks.
Nerds like that don’t care how much football you know. All they see is numbers and science. They think they can tell a veteran coach like Jackson what to do because they crunched some numbers, used a couple of equations and concluded that he can only hit so much in training camp.
Obviously Jackson is following league protocol regarding contact at practice and he knows when to hit at practice and when to lay off. Jackson is right when he says that you have to hit early to get your team ready to play in a game. You think some dork with a mathematics degree or Kinesiology degree knows what’s good for a football team? No, they don’t! However, they don’t have a problem telling you what they think is good because owners like Jimmy Haslem waste time and money by employing them.
Jackson is fighting an uphill battle in Cleveland. The organization is poorly run and the owner is clueless. Jackson could turn the organization around but it is not going to happen if the front office, the sports performance department, the accounting department, P.R or ticket sales get in the way! The front office needs to get out of the way and let the man do his job. Until they do, the Browns will continue to struggle.
