Connecticut
– Fairfield Ludlowe is officially the top team in Connecticut after beating New Canaan on Friday night and snapping their 29 game winning streak. It is a monumental win for the program. Quarterback Ryan Love has been one of the best players in the state this season and could be the biggest reason the Falcons win it in Class LL. Mitch Ross has built a powerhouse program the past two years.
– Greenwich bounced back in a big way after losing to New Canaan by beating Ridgefield 37-0. The Cardinals still look like the team to beat in Class LL.
– Southington hosts New Britain on Friday night in a game that could tell us a lot about Rob Levesque’s team. New Britain has athletes and they will pose problems for Southington defensively.
– We can make an argument for St. Joe’s right now as the top team in Connecticut. They will prove whether they are or not this weekend when they take on New Canaan.
Maine
– There are some intriguing opening round matchups in the playoffs in Maine. Here are the ones we’re watching for the first round.
#3 Massabesic at #2 Bonny Eagle (A)
#4 Falmouth at #1 Marshwood (B)
#4 Oceanside at #1 Greely (C)
Massachusetts
– If you’re looking for a dark horse in the Division One playoffs, look no further than the Wachusett Mountaineers who have the type of offense you need to score points.
– Newton North had a great season finishing the regular season 7-1 but it goes to show you the importance of playing a strong schedule. League play isn’t enough unless you are in the Hockomock League or the MVC.
– A clerical error cost Boston English a chance to make the MIAA playoffs. Once again, the adults screw over the kids. Unbelievable.
– Durfee finished the regular season with a 6-2 record. It was an impressive season for the Hilltoppers. Quarterback Matt Sherry has been a dude and has quietly put together one of the best seasons in the state at the position.
– Division 2 has been gift wrapped by some folks to CM but schools like North Quincy, Peabody, BR and Billerica are all programs worth keeping an eye in the playoffs.
– Reading at King Philip will be one of the best games this weekend. The Rockets are a legitimate contender in Division 3. Don’t sleep on them.
-Division 6 also has several match ups to watch. Case, Fairhaven II should be a dandy on Thursday night.
New Hampshire
– The D1 playoff should be fantastic, especially if the favorites hold serve this weekend and take on Windham, Winnacunnet and Bishop Guertin who all have byes.
– The D2 playoffs are also intriguing with Plymouth and Souhegan the favorites but Pelham and Merrimack Valley could potentially spoil the expected state title match up.
Rhode Island
– Cranston East wrapped up an undefeated season with a big win over East Greenwich. Jimmy Cook’s Bolts are a solid favorite in Division 3.
– Same can be said in D2 where East Providence has the look of a prohibitive favorite. The only thing, there are several teams in two that could be primed to pull off an upset most notably Burriville and Johnston.
– D4 appears to be wide open. Central Falls Co-op looks to be the early favorite but don’t sleep on Narragansett. They are always in the mix.
Vermont
– St. Johnsbury and Burr & Burton both rolled last week and are still on championship course for next weekend.
– Fair Haven struggled a bit down the stretch but the Slaters appear to be well positioned to get to the D2 state title game. Standing in their way is Lyndon Institute who they beat 20-0 earlier this season.
– Barring an upset, we’re expecting an Otter Valley, Mt. Abraham final in D3. The two programs have been the best programs in the division all season long.
