Vrabel address turnover issues

FOXBOROUGH – Mike Vrabel called the win against the Jets lucky during his postgame press conference on Sunday.

Given how frequently the Patriots continue to turn the ball over, he’s not wrong.

With two more fumbles on Sunday, New England has 13 turnovers behind only the lowly Chargers who have 15. Their turnover differential is -6, which ranks them 30th in the NFL.

Vrabel was on The Greg Hill Show on Monday morning for his usual WEEI spot and said “we turn the ball over at a historic rate and it’s ridiculous. It’s embarrassing.”

About four hours later during his weekly day-after-game press conference, I asked him if there’s anything more the staff can do, or if it’s simply on the players to take onus and hold onto the ball.

“We’ll rep it more. We’ll put more time into it, I guess. I don’t know how you can put any more time into the amount of ball security drills we do,” he said. “Take a bigger onus of protecting the guy with the ball. Somebody beats me across my face and hammers the ball out, to share half the fumble. But I’m certainly cognizant.

“You can put it on me. That’s probably the easiest thing.”

While Vrabel will probably never throw his guys completely under the bus, it’s hard to blame the staff at this point. Professionals should be able to hold onto the ball much better than the Patriots have done through six games this season.
