Vrabel, Maye dismiss any idea of ‘rift’ between them

FOXBOROUGH – This is what happens when you go to the Super Bowl and then start 1-2.

Everything is on the table.

Replace Drake Maye with Tommy DeVito. Fire Josh McDaniels. Trade Drake Maye. Drake Maye hates Mike Vrabel. You hear all of it from fans petrified of a lost season three weeks in.

The Maye-Vrabel rift talk was the latest to fall into the team’s lap on Wednesday, fanned by Greg Hill on WEEI during his morning show. Vrabel was asked about it during his press conference prior to practice and quickly answered the only way Vrabel could.

“He heard from who? Unnamed sources? Let me just tell you why I’m here. I’m here because Drake was the quarterback. Believe it or not, I had choices as to where I wanted to coach,” he said. “I wanted to coach here because Drake was the quarterback. So, I don’t have really much other to add to that about a comment from an unnamed source.

“But I’ll just tell you what I’ve told numerous people if they want to ask me why I’m here.”

After practice around 4:10 in the afternoon, Maye stepped to the podium for his usual Wednesday availability and the first question from Karen Guregian was about a possible issue between him and his head coach.

“Coach Vrabel’s been one of the best football coaches I’ve had in my life,” Maye said. “I think Coach Vrabel’s been one of the biggest things as to why this has been so enjoyable for me is playing for Coach. I think we all feel that way in the locker room. He pushes us hard. I’ve loved playing for him, and it’s not going to change. It hasn’t changed, and it won’t change.

“The way he pushes me, and he coaches the quarterbacks in a way that I really respect, and I’m looking forward to getting going, proving to Coach that I can lead this football team and play good football.”

It’s far too early for any kind of issue between Vrabel and Maye, especially after the success the pair had last season. It’s almost as if people want it to happen just for the drama.

That being said, if the ugliness on the field continues from Maye, then we’ll see…
