FOXBOROUGH – For the first time since the AFC Divisional round, there was real football at Gillette Stadium on Friday night.
The Patriots hosted the Colts for the first preseason game of 2026, with (RESULT).
Here’s our Dudes and Duds from a fairly entertaining night in Foxborough…
DUDES
Tommy DeVito
The darling of training camp so far didn’t set the world on fire, but did have a good night, playing the entire first half. DeVito was 13-22 for 138 yards and a great touchdown throw to Kyle Williams from 12-yards out late in the first half. DeVito protected the ball, maneuvered the pocket well and continues to show he’s more than capable of at least keeping the offense afloat if (God forbid) Drake Maye ever goes down.
Kyle Williams
Williams is battling for a roster spot (or so it seems) this summer. While he only had two catches for 37 yards, his explosiveness and speed is still very much a weapon and his TD from DeVito looked far easier than it should have because he was able to get so open so easily.
Jam Miller
The rookie running back hasn’t had a ton of opportunities in camp, but when he has he always seems to flash a bit, whether showing off his quickness or his ability to make guys miss. Miller had 14 carries for 55 yards in just the first half, an impressive showing in his first real NFL game action. Both he and Lan Larison will continue to battle it out for the remainder of camp. With injuries piling up in that room, being a valuable depth piece that hangs around could be their golden ticket to a roster spot.
Defense as a whole
Four turnovers is a hell of a night. The most impressive one came down at the goal line when Jeremiah Pharms forced a fumble as Indy was going in to score, with Dell Pettus coming out of the pile with it. John Saunders and Kindle Vildor also had interceptions and KJ Britt forced a fumble with Isaiah Iton recovering. Joshua Farmer also had a 12-yard sack. Late in the third quarter, a PBU by rookie Bradyn Swinson resulted in a forced turnover on downs inside the Pats’ 10, another big moment in a night full of them on that side of the ball.
DUDS
Offensive line
It’s not necessarily because of the play in the pass pro or running game, but more so the penalties. The Pats had several big chunk plays brought back on Thursday night for illegal man downfield calls or holds. Gotta obviously get cleaned up (and it will)…the depth is also a little worrisome now too. Caleb Lomu was ok but not great and Ben Brown left with an injury. This week against Philly will tell us even more when the two teams have joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday before Saturday night’s preseason game.
Andy Borregales
Borreagles has had a good camp, but the consistency has been lacking lately. Now, in fairness it’s hard to really get on him for missing a 56-yard attempt and then a 55-yard attempt later on Thursday, but the 49-yarder to win the game with 13 seconds left that was very wide wasn’t ideal. Borregales did have makes of 52 and 40-yards and we still believe fans should be very confident in him, the consistency has faded a bit since his perfect start to camp. Mike Vrabel was direct postgame, saying they need him to be better and they do. It’ll be interesting to see how he responds in joint practices with Philly this week.
