FOXBOROUGH – Well, that was fun.
For just over two hours, the Patriots and Colts got after it in a productive, efficient joint practice out on the fields behind Gillette Stadium on Tuesday morning.
Christian González not participating was the biggest news of the day, while Mike Vrabel (unsurprisingly) also announced Drake Maye won’t play in the first preseason game on Thursday night. Presumably, a lot of guys won’t, which is why joint practices have suddenly taken on so much importance.
The action got going right from the very first 1-on-1 rep. Here’s everything that went down on Tuesday…
1-on-1’s
This was basically a highlight reel for the Patriots receivers. These are also rapid fire so while I didn’t get who threw every pass, the majority of these were from Drake Maye with some from Tommy DeVito…
-Maye comeback to AJ Brown after he put Sauce Garnder on the ground, drawing a huge gasp from the crowd.
-Maye to Pop for a sideline grab against Justin Walley.
-Maye to Hunter Henry after Henry burned a linebacker over the middle.
-Romeo Doubs drop over the middle.
-Kyle Williams torches a DB on a crosser for an easy catch.
-Quick out to Jack Westover (wide open).
-Crosser to Cameron Dorner.
-PBU for Indy DB over the middle against Reggie Gilliam, who tried to shake his defender late and couldn’t.
-Kyle Williams wide open over the middle after getting off the line quickly.
-Incompletion from Maye looking for Henry who got tied up a bit trying to get across the middle.
-Incompletion deep looking for Kayshon Boutte (overthrow by Maye).
-Easy crosser to Eli Raridon after beating his defender cleanly.
-Great little comeback route for Hunter Henry with Maye.
-Nice running grab by Boutte against Johnathan Edwards.
-Efton Chism III wide open over the middle.
-Incompletion to Raridon with Robert Carter Jr. in coverage for the Colts.
-Mack Hollins drops a slant.
-Great back shoulder throw from DeVito for Kobe Prentice.
-Another phenomenal back shoulder throw, this time from Maye to Doubs along the right sideline.
-Out to Pop Douglas (wide open again, virtually un-coverable throughout camp).
-Comeback to Hollins.
-Sick little move and a diving grab for Chism III running across the field. He continues to make it hard for the team to not keep him.
-Slant to Tejahun Palmer.
-Crosser to Prentice.
-Incomplete over the middle to Hollins (looked like he got tripped up).
-One last pretty back shoulder throw from Maye to Pop, who made a leaping grab against Walley.
11-on-11
Maye: Short run for Rhamondre Stevenson, comeback on the sideline to Henry, back-to-back runs for Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson (Henderson bounced off a few tacklers, he’s had a good camp)…incompletion to Henderson, run stuff for Indy, nice ball up the seam to Henry.
DeVito: Outside run for Henderson, hitch to Henry, quick completion to Kyle Williams, Lan Larison run is stuffed, Terrell Jennings’ run is stuffed, Kyle Williams hauls in deep post TD (dime from DeVito).
Maye: Short run for Stevenson, intermediate sideline completion to Brown, crosser to Pop, Williams falls down on a deep ball, incompletion to Boutte over the middle vs. Gardner, Brown falls down on what looked like a hitch along the right sideline.

Maye: Great ball up the seam for Raridon, incompletion along the sideline for Boutte, quick slant to Brown, dime down the right sideline for Doubs vs. Indy’s Cam Taylor-Britt, run stuff on Jennings, quick swing to Henderson.

7-on-7 red zone
After about a 10-15 minute special teams period, it was onto 7-on-7 in the red zone…
Maye: Slant to Brown, short to Hollins, phenomenal leaping TD grab for Stevenson in the back left corner over a linebacker.
DeVito: Incompletion to Henry in the end zone (overthrown), incomplete high for Henderson on a. hitch (high), slant to Boutte just shy of the goal line.

11-on-11 red zone
Maye: Short run Stevenson, toss to Henderson, scramble & a slide, slant TD to Brown, short run Stevenson, DeForest Buckner bats a ball at the line of scrimmage.
DeVito: Incompletion to Hollins (out of his reach), Hollins TD on a crosser, Jennings crosser TD, hand off to Larison, throw away through the back of the end zone after a rollout.
Maye: Maye finds Stevenson with an odd looking floater after he was immediately rushed (Stevenson tracked it like a centerfielder), Stevenson run is stuffed, TD to Doubs in the back right corner (wide open), incompletion to Brown (high), slant to Boutte for a TD.
DeVito: Short run Jennings, no gain Miller, back line TD throw to Raridon (dart), no gain Miller, Henry back line TD (dart).
Field goals
Andy Borregales went 5-7, continuing his well above average summer, although the consistency has wained a bit the last few practices.
Situational (2 minute)
1;12 on the clock…
Maye: Back-to-back completions to Pop over the middle, scramble (timeout with 27 seconds left)…false start, quick gain to Chism III (ball down inside the red zone), Maye intercepted in the back of the end zone by Camryn Bynum on an under thrown ball for Boutte (it might have been Pop, to to see).
DeVito: 61-yard TD bomb to Hollins down the right sideline. Ball reset at the five and he hits Raridon for another easy TD. As Dell Pettus put it after practice, DeVito is in a ‘flow state’ right now.
Indy scored on its first two-minute drive, but John Saunders ended the day on a high note for the Pats with a tip-drill interception to close out the day.
