Caleb Lomu, OT
HT: 6’6 1/4
WT: 313 lbs
School: Utah
The Patriots selected Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu with the 28th overall pick. New England traded picks 31 and 125 (4th Round) to the Buffalo Bills to move up three spots.
Patriots VP of Football Ops said Long was a player the Patriots targeted and when he was still on the board at 28, the Patriots pulled the trigger and moved up.
Here is my scouting report on Caleb Lomu.
Initial Quicks: Lomu flashes elite get-off for his size. He is consistently one of the first movers on the line, using quick feet to gain a positional advantage before the defensive lineman can establish their rush lane. He has the natural athleticism to beat wider-set edge rushers to the spot.
Run Block: He demonstrates excellent natural leverage, playing with a flat back and a strong base. Lomu is rarely caught leaning; instead, he maintains high-level body control and balance through the whistle, allowing him to sustain blocks against heavy-handed defenders.
Pass Block: This is a hallmark of his game. He operates with a smooth, rhythmic pass set and light feet that allow him to mirror twitchy edge rushers. He shows a high football IQ in space, demonstrating the ability to adjust his depth and angle mid-rep to handle counter-moves or stunts.
Pull & Trap: Extremely mobile for a tackle. Lomu is comfortable operating in space, showing the coordination to hit moving targets at the second level. He takes efficient paths to linebackers and shows the “short-area” agility to adjust his frame and seal lanes on the move.
Use of Hands: Lomu plays with “heavy” hands. He is adept at getting early separation by landing his punch inside the defender’s frame. He consistently keeps DL off his chest, using his length to maintain the arc of the pocket and reset his grip when necessary.
Strength: While he has a leaner frame than some traditional “mauler” tackles, his functional strength is impressive. He plays with the low center of gravity needed to anchor against bull rushes and possesses the leg drive to move the pile in short-yardage situations.
Explosion: Lomu finishes his blocks with a nasty streak. He plays with noticeable “pop” on contact, often jolting defenders backward upon impact. He stays low through his transitions, ensuring that his power is generated from the ground up.
Final Scouting Report: Caleb Lomu is a high-ceiling offensive tackle prospect who combines modern athletic traits with technical refinement. His ability to mirror in pass protection makes him a natural fit for a zone-blocking scheme or a pass-heavy offense. While he provides a reliable anchor in the run game, his true value lies in his movement skills—specifically his ability to pull and climb to the second level.
Lomu projects as a Day 1 starter at the next level with the versatility to play either tackle spot, though his footwork and lateral range suggest he could develop into a premier blindside protector. Teams looking for a mobile, balanced tackle with a disciplined approach to hand fighting will find him to be a blue-chip addition to their front five.
