The Patriots have traded linebacker Marte Mapu and a seventh round pick in this year’s draft to the Houston Texans for a sixth round pick in this year’s draft. The move marks the departure of a versatile defender who spent three seasons in Foxborough.
Mapu, a 26-year-old Sacramento State product, originally joined the Patriots as a third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 230 pounds, Mapu appeared in 44 games for New England, earning 10 starts during his career. He departs with career totals of 69 tackles, three interceptions, a half-sack, and five forced fumbles. Beyond his defensive contributions, he was a fixture on special teams, where he recorded 20 tackles over three years.
In his final season with the Patriots, Mapu remained a durable and reliable contributor, appearing in all 17 regular-season games. He finished the season with 13 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble, while his 12 special teams tackles ranked among the highest on the roster.
Mapu also appeared in all four playoff games, contributing an assisted tackle on special teams. With a limited overall role, he ultimately became expendable and the Patriots moved on.
