Going undefeated on the road bodes well for the future

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ- For only only the third time in franchise history, the Patriots have gone undefeated on the road in the regular season, Both of those teams made a run to the Super Bowl. Could the 2025 Patriots replicate those runs and make a run of their own to the big game?

Winning on the road is hard in the NFL. So many factors determine whether or not a team can win away from their place. Teams that can win on the road typically win championships. It is also testament to how they are built.

Patriots Coach Mike Vrabel said after Sunday’s 42-10 win over the Jets in the Meadowlands that the team established itself as a potentially good road team when they went down to Miami and won their first road game in Week 2.

“It was a tough one, the first one, just going all the way back to Miami, and I think that that was just a really important game for us. Being able to battle and give up a punt return, answer with a kickoff return, I mean, going all the way back and just … big kick from Andy. We’ve talked about all those things that have helped us along the way and talked about just unfinished business on the road and being able to, when we needed to, handle the environment and make critical plays and get off to a good start like we did today. Really proud of this football team and what they’ve been able to do. Anytime you travel, it’s difficult.”

Embracing a “Road Warriors” mentality was instilled in the Patriots from the beginning when Vrabel took over. He emphasized the importance of being able to win on the road and what it could mean for a team. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye said the team had “unfinished business” when it same to playing away from Gillette Stadium.

“Coach said, ‘Unfinished business.’ You want to go 8-0 on the road. That’d be something that we thought would be pretty cool. In this league, it’s hard to win on the road, and we accomplished that today. Just proud of the guys. We came out here, started fast, and didn’t stop from there. So just proud of the guys. That was a good one to get under our belt, and we still got another week next week to get back at it.”

Teams that can consistently win on the road are the teams that typically play in January and February. They are battle tested and know how to win big games. Going undefeated is more than just an accomplishment. It is vindication that the Patriots are built to compete for a championship.

Linebacker Jahlani Tavai echoed the unfinished business sentiment that permeated throughout the locker room after the game.

“We had it unfinished business, so we’re extremely happy to get another win. We just got to keep it going now.”

Keeping it going means winning in the playoffs and that could potentially mean a trip to Denver for the AFC Championship game if the Broncos win on Sunday and clinch the top seed in the AFC. The Patriots have proven during the regular season that no road environment intimidates them.

It is a good sign of things to come for a team that all of a sudden finds itself in Super Bowl contention after back to back 4-13 seasons.
