5 Who Impressed Me and 5 Who Depressed Me at Patriots Training Camp: Day -12

After Monday’s washout practice, the sun returned to the practice fields of Gillette Stadium on Tuesday. it was a packed house both in the stands and in the media tent as the Patriots practiced for the final time ahead of Thursday’s pre-season opener.

Here is who impressed and who depressed me on Tuesday.

5 Players Who Impressed

Kayshon Boutte- Boutte has had a strong week after a rough start. He is running good routes, displaying the wide catch radius that made him one of the toughest guys to cover in college football and has shown the ability separate after the catch. He still faces an uphill battle to make the team but Boutte has acquitted himself well of late.

Deatrich Wise- Wise has had a strong camp and is proving to be a player that will once again play a pivotal role in the success of the front seven. He has consistently rushed the passer throughout camp and he is doing a good job of getting off blocks and getting into his pursuit angle. The defense has been playing two hand touch with offensive players thus far. Despite that, Wise has still practiced with goos effort.

Tre Nixon- It is Tre Nixon season so it is no surprise that he has had a good camp and positioning himself to compete for a roster. Nixon runs good routes, has strong hands and competes for the one on one. He will once again put himself in a position where he is either a final cut or ends up on the practice squad. Making the final 53 could be tough.

Tyquan Thornton- Thornton shook off Sunday and has had back to back good practices. There is no denying Thornton’s speed and skill set. It is all there. He needs to stay healthy and be more consistent. He has been very good the past two practices.

Isaiah Bolden- I really like what I have seen from the rookie of late. He is getting more comfortable in the Patriots defense and you can see it by the way he lines up on wide receivers and plays the ball. His length and athleticism are undeniable. Bolden has all the tools to be a good boundary corner but he can also impact the game as a return man.

Conor McDermott- McDermott is not getting enough publicity in terms of how good a camp he has had. He has done a good job in pass pro, especially against the speed rushers on the roster. He is fundamentally sound, has good feet for a big man and he does a good job of cutting the edge and forcing pass rushers back inside. The Patriots are in good hands with him at right tackle.

5 Guys Who Depressed Me

Shaun Wade- Wade continues to struggle. He has had his moments in this camp but yesterday he was beat deep on a fade ball by Nixon and continue to show a lack of instincts in certain situations. Wade has ability and could make this team with his length and position versatility but given the amount of cornerbacks in camp, it will be hard.

Riley Reiff- I want to see more from Reiff. A veteran with his experience and versatility should pop more at practive. I honestly haven’t seen it in the past week, plus. I still think Reiff was a good signing and he will pay dividends but I was expecting more up until this point.

Chasen Hines- Hines has not really done enough in this training camp to position himself to beat out the three rookies. He has his moments where you see his raw strength and ability to move people in the run game but it is just not consistent rough.

Corliss Waitman- Waitman started off strong but hasn’t been the same punter in recent practices. The left footed punter thing is an advantage but you still need to drive the ball and force punt returners to back up. We haven’t seen that consistently enough. Bryce Baringer was already the favorite and still appears to be that way.

Jabrill Peppers & Myles Bryant- Neither had a bad practice. They made this list because they got “Mossed” by Mike Gesicki who made a sick one handed catch in the red zone. So as a result, to quote Chris Jericho: “YOU JUST MADE THE LIST!”
