5 Match-Ups to Watch vs. the Los Angeles Chargers

The Patriots host the Chargers on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Here are five match-ups to watch in a game that the Patriots could win. Getting off to a good start and finishing drives early will be two big keys.

1. Jonathan Jones vs. Keenan Allen: Allen is Justin Herbert’s go to target. The Patriots will need to double team him in certain situations, specially in the red zone. They could also switch who covers him depending on down and distance or situation.

2. Khalil Mack vs. Patriots O-Tackles: The Patriots offensive tackles will have their hands full with Mack. The good news is that Joey Bosa is out so they will not have to deal with him. Mack had a big last Sunday night against the Ravens. he can still bring the juice off the edge so the Patriots offensive tackles will have their hands full. Do not be surprised if they help the tackles at times today.

3. Bailey Zappe vs. The Chargers Secondary: The Chargers rank 32nd in the NFL against the pass. They have struggled. The Patriots need to open things up with Bailey Zappe starting. Come out throwing and attack this suspect secondary whoich is surrendering 280 yards per game through the air.

4. Austin Eckler vs. Patriots Front Seven: Eckler isn’t having the season he had last season but he is still playing at a high level. The Patriots front seven has to be gap sound and not over pursue because Eckler is one of the best cut back runners in the league and he has a second gear in space. He is a finisher.

5. Bill O’Brien vs. Brandon Staley: O’Brien has had a tough season but he has a good match-up today against Staley who has struggled to get his defense to play at a high level, consistently all season long. The Patriots may have some success todat offensively if Zappe plays well.
