3-Step Slant: Three Reasons Why the Cleveland Browns Should Not Draft Myles Garrett

By John Sarianides

Texas A&M defensive end prospect Myles Garrett released a video in which he asked Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to trade up and draft him. In the video, Garrett claims he is a Cowboys fan and that he doesn’t want to play in a cold weather city. Here are three reasons why the Browns shouldn’t draft Garrett first overall.

1. Garrett Doesn’t Want to Play in Cleveland: Garrett made it abundantly clear in a video that was released yesterday that he doesn’t want to play in Cleveland. Any time a player says he doesn’t want to play in a cold weather city, he’s not caring enough or tough enough to build a franchise around.

Garrett is by far the best player in this draft. He could make an impact as a rookie. The question is, does he want to? Will he play up to his potential or even care for that matter if the Browns are out of it in December? I don’t think he would.  It might be too cold for Garrett to care. A guy like like that cannot be the cornerstone of your franchise.

2. The Browns Need a Quarterback: The Browns need a quarterback but unless they fall in love with North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky and take him with the first overall pick, they are probably going to hold off on taking a quarterback until the 12th pick at the earliest.

Hue Jackson is rumored to like Clemson’s DeShaun Watson better than Trubisky however Watson rejected the Browns request to play in the Senior Bowl. The Browns were not happy with Watson and that is why they might be interested in trading for Patriots back up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The Browns will acquire a quarterback this off season. It is just a matter of whether or not they trade for one or draft one.

3. The First Overall Pick Has Value. Trade It! I know Browns fans lamented trading away the second overall pick to the Eagles last year and losing out on Carson Wentz, but the Browns had to trade the pick.

I think they should shop the number one pick in this draft as well. Why not? Cleveland needs players. Trade down, accumulate more picks and continue to build the roster.

Word is the Browns staff is divided on whether or not to draft Garrett. If that’s the case, they shouldn’t take him at one. Especially in light of his recent comments. The Browns should shop the pick.

Garrett has since said that he would welcome the opportunity to play in Cleveland but I would be leery if I were Hue Jackson and Sashi Brown.
