The Dallas Cowboys have a decision to make on Tony Romo this off-season. Do they trade him or cut him?
Trading Romo will not be easy. Teams know that the Cowboys want to move him so they are going to offer next to nothing in any potential deal. Dallas will be lucky to get a sixth or seventh round pick for him.
Jerry Jones should do the right thing and release Romo. Romo has earned the right to choose where he will play for the rest of his career. The Cowboys owe him the right to make that decision, especially when you consider what he has done for the organization.
So, where will Romo end up? Here are three teams that make sense and three that don’t.
3 Best Fits
1. Denver Broncos: The Broncos still have Trevor Siemien and Paxton Lynch on the roster but general manager John Elway would prefer a veteran quarterback if he could acquire one.
Romo would be a great fit in offensive coordinator Mike McCoy’s offense because he’s smart, can make every throw in the book and is acuurate. The Broncos have the talent in place at the skill positions for Romo to thrive. The offensive line is the only question mark but regardless, Romo would be a great fit in Denver.
2. Kansas City Chiefs: Andy Reid gets more out of his quarterbacks than any other coach in the NFL. Romo would flourish in his offense.
Romo is not as athletic than as Alex Smith but he is a better passer and is athletic enough to extend plays out of the pocket and hit the open receiver.
The Chiefs have Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, Jeremy Maclin and three backs who can all impact a game. Romo would be a great fit with this skill group.
3. Houston Texans: The Texans employ a similar system to the Patriots. It is all about getting the ball quick on three step routes, intermediate routes and perimeter screens. Romo is accurate so the offense would fit his skill set. Houston also has a quality skill group for Romo to work with.
The Texans will let Tom Savage and Brock Osweiler compete for the job but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Texans brought in a third quarterback. Romo would fit the bill and it would be a suttle jab at the Cowboys.
3 Bad Fits
1. Buffalo Bills: The Bills are rumored to be interested in Romo but they are a terrible fit for the veteran quarterback.
Outside of LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins, Buffalo lacks the weapons necessary to consistently win games. Factor in an average offensive line and the weather and you see why the Bills are a bad fit for the aging Romo.
2. New York Jets: The Jets are caught between competing and rebuilding. Not only do they need a quarterback but they have other roster holes they need to fill as well. They are not exactly an appealing destination for a quarterback like Romo.
I think the Jets will express interest in bringing Romo to New York but he should stay away. New York is appealing but unless Romo wants to get his tail kicked and lose games, he should stay as far away from the Jets as possible.
3. Chicago Bears: The Bears are also in the market for a veteran quarterback. If nothing else, they will be looking to bring someone in who can compete with Jay Cutler. Tony Romo is better than Cutler. The problem is, the Bears are not very good. Chicago’s skill group leaves a lot to be desired.
I would be surprised if Romo ended up in Chicago. Between a lack of talent, a weak offensive line and the weather, it just doesn’t make sense for Romo to end up in the Windy City.
Tony Romo will play next season. I don’t think he is ready to retire. We know this much, it probably won’t be in Dallas. If it is not in Big D, then where? I think Romo will end up in Denver but it is still too early in the off-season to truly know where Romo plays next season.
