2016 NFL Draft: For the Rams, the Choice is Easy. It’s Carson Wentz.

The Rams will have a tough decision to make next Thursday.

The Rams gave up a boatload of picks to acquire the number one pick in the draft last Friday. They did so that they can draft a quarterback. Now the question being asked is, who is it going to be? Wentz or Goff?

By all accounts, the organization is split. The front office likes Goff, the scouts like Wentz. You can make a case for either guy. Wentz is big, athletic, has plus arm strength and played in a pro-style offense. Goff has a quick release, moves well in the pocket, makes quick decisions and is a California kid. When the Rams said they needed two weeks to make a decision, they really need the two weeks.

I’ll help GM Les Snead and Jeff Fisher make a decision. Take Carson Wentz. I think Wentz has more upside than Goff and he is a better fit in the Rams run first offense. Wentz is a smooth ball handler in the play action passing game and his ability to get outside the pocket on boot and sprint action is also a plus. Wentz is also athletic so the Rams can do more with him in the designed quarterback run game.

Both quarterbacks have upside but both will also need time to develop. That’s why I think it’s imperative that the Rams hold on to either Case Keenum or Nick Foles. The plan should be to start Wentz or Goff but if they struggle, the Rams need to have a veteran back up in place.

When you give up what the Rams gave up to acquire the number one pick, you have to get it right. If the Rams want to get it right, then they need to draft Wentz. That would be the most sensible pick.
