10 candidates I would interview for the Patriots offensive coordinator opening

The Patriots officially have an offensive coordinator opening. Here are some names to keep an eye on as new coach Jerod Mayo looks to fill the vacancy.

Brian Griese, Quarterbacks Coach, 49ers: Griese played at Michigan and played in the NFL for 11 years, starting 83 games. He also had a successful media career. His career parallels Mayo’s in some ways. He is the son of legendary Dolphins quarterback Bob Griese He is only in his second season as quarterbacks coach but he is smart, knows football and is a former quarterback which would be important in helping develop a young quarterback.

Klint Kubiak, Passing Game Coordinator, 49ers: Kubiak is the son of former Broncos quarterback and Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak. He is well schooled in the Shanahan West Coast offense and would bring in the modern version of the offense. He would help open up a passing game that needs some modernization.

Nick Caley, Tight Ends Coach, Rams: Caley is a former Patriots assistant so he has a relationship with Mayo. He has also coached at other stops which means his not a Patriots loyalist when it comes to offensive philosophy. Coaching under Sean McVay has certainly improved Caley’s stock. He has interviewed for offensive coordinator positions in the past and is poised to take a job this off-season.

Zac Robinson, Passing Game Coordinator, Rams: Robinson was a 2008 seventh round pick of the Patriots so he at least knows his way around the building. One of the top young passing game minds in the league, Robinson should be a legitimate candidate for the job. Coaching under McVay is a golden ticket. If Robinson does not land the Patriots offensive coordinator job, he will be in prime position for one of the other openings.

David Girardi, Quarterbacks Coach, Chiefs: Girardi has grown up in Andy Reid’s system in Kansas City. He started as a quality control coach and eventually worked his way up to assistant quarterback coach. He is in his first season as quarterbacks coach. He is young and will need more time but Girardi is certainly a coach that is worth interviewing at least. He has a lot of experience in one of the best offenses in the league.

Joe Bleymaier, Passing Game Coordinator, Chiefs: Bleymaier is also well versed in the Reid system having spent the past eight seasons in Kansas City. He is in his first season as passing game coordinator. Prior to this season, he spent two seasons as the wide receivers coach (2021-22), three seasons as the pass game analyst/assistant quarterbacks coach (2018-20) and two seasons as an offensive quality control coach (2016-17). The Chiefs passing game has been inconsistent at times this season but many around the league believe that Bleymaier is a future offensive coordinator.

Shane Waldron, Former Offensive Coordinator, Seahawks: Waldron has Massachusetts ties having worked for the Patriots, coached at UMass and he played at Tufts. He has done a good job of developing the talent in Seattle and helping quarterback Geno Smith play at an MVP level. Waldron is from the McVay coaching tree having coached with the Rams so he is well versed in the Shanahan system.

Tee Martin, Quarterbacks Coach, Ravens: The former Tennessee quarterback has coached at the college and NFL levels in his career. He has experience as a quarterbacks and receivers coach. He also played in the NFL for four years. His latest coordinating experience was at USC from 2016-18. Other than that, he has strictly been a position coach. He has done a good job with Lamar Jackson this season getting him to play at an MVP caliber level. He would be a good hire due to his experience coaching both quarterbacks and receivers.

Dan Pitcher, Quarterbacks Coach, Bengals: Pitcher has spent most of his career with the Bengals and is credited with the development of Joe Burrow along with offensive coordinator Brian Callahan and head coach Zac Taylor. Pitcher would be a long shot but if you are looking for someone who has experience in the Shanahan, McVay system but is in another organization, Pitcher could be the guy.

Liam Coen, Offensive Coordinator, Kentucky: The Rhode Island native played at LaSalle Academy and UMass. He is one of the best passers in UMass history. He has also coached at UMass, URI and Maine as well as under Sean McVay with the Rams as assistant quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. Coen would be another long shot candidate but one to keep an eye as he has the varied experience the Patriots might be looking for.

Others:

Chad O’Shea, Browns Wide Receivers Coach

Thomas Brown, Former Panthers offensive coordinator

Jim Bob Cooter, Colts quarterbacks coach
