Never say that the Springfield Central football program is afraid of a challenge.
For the second year in a row, the Golden Eagles have rocked the out-of-state scheduling world. On Monday, Central locked up a major opponent for the 2022 season when it connected with St. John’s College of Washington, DC.
The game will take place at Central on Sept. 24. St. John’s previously had a commitment with a Canadian team on that date, but that game fell through. Central and St. John’s then quickly put something together on Monday with the help of Joe Maimone of Prep Gridiron Logistics. Maimone’s company specializes in matching teams from all over the country.
St. John’s is a nationally-ranked program that last year went 11-0. The Cadets play in the WCAC, which is one of the best leagues in the country, and also has powers like DeMatha, Good Counsel, and Gonzaga.
A year ago, Central welcomed IMG Academy to Springfield. IMG won that one, 49-0, but Central won some more respect for going out and challenging itself like the Golden Eagles did.
Central is coming off a Div. 1 state title and returns a ton. The Golden Eagles will be one of the top teams in New England again this fall.
Just to tie everything together, St. John’s actually beat IMG back in 2014, 35-2.
This is the premier out-of-state game of the season, and Central continues to win respect with how the Golden Eagles schedule.
