Don Brown’s first recruiting class will be the key to setting the tone for his second stint at UMass. Whether it is incoming freshmen or transfers, Brown and the coaches currently on staff need to bring in talent that will alter the current course of the program.
Brown and recruiting coordinator Jeff Moore have worked tirelessly in the past few days to try and secure as many commitments as possible.
Both recognize that this is the first step in rebuilding the roster. A roster that is young but short on experience.
Incoming freshmen will play a major part in the turnaround of the program but I would also expect a fair number of transfers to come into the program between now and the start of spring ball. You will see new faces entering the program all the way into the summer.
It is the quickest way for Brown to infuse talent and make the program competitive right away.
Several local prospects are expected to sign with the Minutemen today. Quarterback Chase Brewster (Tilton School/N.H), outside linebacker Jaylen Murphy (Everett), Jalen Stewart (Loomis-Chaffee), Ty Harding (BB&N) and EDGE Kofi Asare (Doherty) will all sign officially today.
Several impact out of state recruits will sign today as well including running back Donta Whack (Florida) and defensive back Cornelius Wright.
Brown will upgrade the talent this off-season. The Minutemen will be better. How much better will ultimately depend on what UMass does today and the rest of the off-season to upgrade the roster. If today is any indication, they will be better.
